Emmanuel Macron has announced a new package of military aid for Ukraine which he said is worth £1.66billion (two billion euros). It includes light tanks, air defence and anti-tank missiles on top of other weapons and support.

The French President said a proposed European armed force for possible deployment in Ukraine, along with an eventual peace deal, could “respond” to a Russian attack if Moscow were to launch one. Mr Macron spoke after talks in Paris with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.

That came ahead of a summit in the French capital of some 30 nations today (Thursday, March 27) which will discuss the proposed force for Ukraine that Mr Macron suggested could be deployed in “important towns” and elsewhere.

Britain and France have been pushing to build a coalition of countries willing in one way or another to support the deployment of an armed force in Ukraine, with the aim of securing a lasting peace by dissuading Russia from attacking the country again.
