The ‘toxic’ lake that’s one of the world’s deadliest with a bright green tinge

In the remote high-altitude landscapes of Bolivia, Laguna Verde is a breathtaking natural wonder, but also one of the most toxic lakes on Earth. With its striking emerald-green waters, the lake might seem inviting, but its beauty hides a deadly secret. Contaminated with high levels of arsenic, copper, and other minerals, Laguna Verde is an environment where life struggles to survive.

Located at the foot of the towering Licancabur volcano in the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, this stunning body of water sits at an altitude of over 4,300 meters above sea level. The extreme conditions and chemical composition make Laguna Verde an inhospitable place for both wildlife and humans.

The lake’s striking green hue is due to the high concentration of dissolved copper, which, along with arsenic, renders the water highly toxic.

Despite its dangers, Laguna Verde remains a popular destination for adventurers and photographers drawn to its otherworldly landscape. The lake’s surreal color shifts between turquoise and deep green, depending on the wind and mineral disturbances in the water.

The lake’s toxicity is a result of natural geological processes.

The volcanic activity beneath Licancabur has led to mineral-rich deposits seeping into the lake, creating a lethal cocktail of arsenic, lead, and sulfur. These toxic elements prevent the development of any significant aquatic life. Even birds, which are often seen wading in Andean lakes, avoid Laguna Verde’s waters.

Scientists have studied the lake’s extreme environment to understand how life, if any, might survive in similar conditions elsewhere, such as on Mars.

The area’s harsh climate, high UV radiation, and extreme chemical composition provide valuable insights for astrobiologists studying extraterrestrial environments.

While Laguna Verde is dangerous, it continues to draw visitors who trek across Bolivia’s remote Altiplano region to witness its mesmerising colours.

Tourists are advised to admire the lake from a safe distance, as contact with the water can be hazardous. Additionally, the high altitude poses its own challenges, with visitors often experiencing altitude sickness if not properly acclimatised.
