Eight Spanish holiday spots beloved by Brits are set to be hit with a huge downpour of rain amid a country-wide storm.

The Spanish Met Office (AEMET) has said that a day of instability is expected across the Iberian Peninsula tomorrow (March 21) due to with Storm Martinho.

Rain is expected to hit the Balearic Islands (Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza), the Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Palma), and Barcelona.

The central west and the Cantabrian Mountains are likely to see persistent rain. Western Andalusia is forecast heavy and persistent rainfall, where heavy showers accompanied by storms on the coasts may occur.

In the Canary Islands, the tail end of the front will leave light rain on the higher-elevation islands, with more abundant rainfall on La Palma.

The front is unlikely to reach the eastern third of the Spanish mainland, where Mediterranean moisture is expected to leave some light rain.

Maximum temperatures are expected to rise significantly in the Balearic Islands, southeast and northeast of the peninsula, and the Pyrenees. Minimum temperatures are increasing across the board, notably areas of the southwest inland.

Strong winds will occur in most of the northwest, the Cantabrian Sea, the upper and middle Ebro, the Pyrenees, the eastern southern plateau, the far west and high areas of the eastern half of Andalusia, the Alboran Mountains, and parts of Majorca.

Gusts could reach “hurricane-force” in the Cantabrian peaks, and other parts of Andalusia and the southern plateau. Snow is also possible in the Central System, the Cantabrian Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada.

AEMET said more inclement weather is expected throughout the day, adding there had already been “significant” rainfall yesterday evening.

The Canary Islands government has advised residents not to undertake unnecessary travel due to harsh winds. Roads have already had to be shut across Spain due to storms in recent days, with trains and flights also cancelled.
