A stunning Mediterranean island that has long been a beloved vacation spot for German travellers could soon turn into a favourite destination for British tourists. Djerba is a picturesque island located off the southeastern coast of Tunisia in the Mediterranean Sea.

Known for its stunning beaches, rich history, and diverse cultural influences, Djerba is a popular destination for tourists seeking both relaxation and cultural exploration. However, due to limited flight connectivity from the UK, many British travellers haven’t even heard of the beautiful island. But now, budget airline EasyJet is introducing a new twice-weekly service from London Luton to Djerba.

Djerba flights will operate every Tuesday and Saturday. Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK Country Manager, said: “Djerba is a new and exciting destination in our network and will appeal to those customers looking for a unique, off-the-beaten-track winter holiday.

Renowned for its pristine condition, the island has white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, making it a prime location for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. Several luxury resorts, especially in the tourist zone around Midoun, offer a mix of relaxation and entertainment.

Not only this but the island has a rich mix of Arab, Berber, Jewish, and Mediterranean influences, reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and traditions. The island is home to El Ghriba Synagogue, one of the oldest Jewish synagogues in the world and an important pilgrimage site.

The town of Houmt Souk, the island’s capital, features traditional white-washed buildings, lively markets, and historic mosques.

The island is also famous for its handmade pottery, woven carpets, and silver jewelry. Visitors can explore the bustling souks (markets) in Houmt Souk to buy local crafts, spices, and textiles.

One of the travellers who has been to the island wrote on the TripAdvisor forum: “Despite spending time here, I missed so many spots. There is no guide or route map to view these open art installations. It was a stunning experience for me, and if you like public art, do not miss this place.”

Another wrote: “Amazing painting on the walls and beautiful, colourful alleyways with art galleries and boutique restaurants such as Bric Yaffa.”
