Lewis Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari for the 2025 Formula 1 season has sparked widespread debate and criticism, with some questioning the motives and potential outcomes of the move. At 40 years old, Hamilton faces skepticism about his ability to compete at the highest level, particularly from figures like Bernie Ecclestone and Eddie Jordan. Ecclestone suggested that Hamilton might struggle to adapt to Ferrari’s internal dynamics, while Jordan labeled the decision to replace Carlos Sainz with Hamilton as “suicidal” and speculated it was driven by commercial interests rather than performance.

In response, Hamilton has dismissed these criticisms, emphasizing his unique journey in Formula 1 as the sport’s only Black driver and his hunger for success. In an interview with Time magazine, he stated, “You can’t compare me to another 40-year-old… I’m focused on one thing, and that’s winning.” He also highlighted his ability to use negativity as motivation, adding that he does not engage with critics but lets his performance speak for itself.

Hamilton’s move marks only the second team switch in his illustrious career, following a dominant 12-year stint at Mercedes where he won six of his seven world championships. The transition to Ferrari represents a fresh challenge for the veteran driver, who described it as invigorating and necessary for his career. Despite Ferrari’s historical struggles with consistency and recent regulatory changes in F1, Hamilton expressed confidence in the team’s potential and his ability to contribute to its success. He has set his sights on securing a record-breaking eighth world title.

As preseason testing in Bahrain concludes, Hamilton appears optimistic about the upcoming season. While he faces stiff competition from younger drivers like Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, Hamilton remains determined to prove that age is no barrier to success. The season kicks off with the Australian Grand Prix on March 16, where fans will get their first glimpse of Hamilton in Ferrari’s iconic red car.
